Each amino acids has at least <strong>one carboxylic group (\u2013 COOH)<\/strong> and <strong>one amino group (\u2013 NH<sub>2<\/sub>)<\/strong> attached to \u03b1-carbon, hence \u03b1-amino acids. The \u03b1-carbon also bears one hydrogen and a hydrocarbon which in case of glycine (simplest and smallest) is a second hydrogen.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-670 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.meniit.com\/study-material\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/amino_acids.png\" alt=\"amino_acids\" width=\"385\" height=\"217\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.meniit.com\/study-material\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/amino_acids.png 385w, https:\/\/www.meniit.com\/study-material\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/amino_acids-300x169.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 385px) 100vw, 385px\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Amino acids can also be refereed as substituted methanes. There are some 200 amino acids, out of which 20 occur in proteins. Proline and hydroxyproline have \u2013 NH (imino group) instead of \u2013 NH<sub>2<\/sub>. They are,therefore, <strong>imino acids<\/strong> instead of amino acids.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">A particular property of amino acids is the ionizable nature of NH<sub>2<\/sub> and COOH groups.
